A quality Scottish Georgian longcase clock. A smaller, well proportioned oak case with an arched trunk door. An arched hood pediment with brass capped front and rear hood columns. An arched brass and silvered dial signed to the circular arch boss 'Wm Robb Montrose'. A strike/silent lever to the arch below the name boss and date and seconds dials. A quality 8-day duration mechanism striking the hours on a bell. Circa 1770.
William Robb of Montrose is recorded in Whytes' 'Scottish Clock & Watchmakers' book as working from 1746-1780. He was an important and highly talented clockmaker and he is illustrated on the front and back cover of the book with a complicated astrological clock.
