 A fine quality and rarer first period mercury wheel barometer. A swan neck pediment with ivory/bone finials. A hygrometer with an original adjuster below which turns the hygro. pointer. A long silvered dial to the mercury thermometer with a hinged opening door. The very well engraved main dial is signed 'WALTR. GOUGH No 21 MIDDLE ROW HOLBORN LONDON'. Choice flame mahogany veneers to the case with parquetry case inlays. Chequered case banding to the edges and around the dial. The original wooden bezel surrounding the main dial. Circa 1790.

Walter Gough of Holborn, London worked in the late 18th and early 19th century. In page 43 of Banfields' 'Wheel or Banjo Barometers' book a near identical barometer by Walter Gough is illustrated on page 43. He was also a watch and clockmaker and a clock is in Kew Palace as part of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's collection.
