A Marine Stick Barometer Bate of London.

 A quality Victorian marine stick barometer by Bate of London. A slim mahogany case with a brass cistern cover to the base.  A well engraved dial with scale from 27 to 31 inches with a slide adjuster and a mercury bulb thermometer. An arched brass surround to the dial. A brass and mahogany gimbal mount. The top of the dial is engraved 'BATE LONDON'. A near identical one is in the Science Museum in London. Circa 1840.

The Bate firm was a family instrument-making firm primarily associated with Robert B Bate (1782-1847). They were based at 20-21 Poultry in the City of London. Amongst their various clients was the Admiralty, to whom they supplied instruments and charts. After the death of R. B. Bate, the firm was carried on by his wife Anna until 1850; she died the following year.
