A mid 18th century English Lantern clock. A well engraved arched dial signed 'Robt Cutbush Maidstone' with a silvered chapter ring and the original single hand layout. Brass side doors and a well made frame standing on feet. A bell to the top and finial with strapwork to the 4 finials. Hour bell striking. An anchor escapement mechanism of 30 hour duration with rope drive. A later oak wall bracket of solid construction and age which matches well. Circa 1750.


Robert Cutbush of Maidstone is recorded in Loomes 'Lantern Clocks & Their Makers' book as being married in 1737 and working until circa 1772. An arched dial Lantern clock signed by the maker is noted in the book. The Cutbush family of clockmakers worked from 1702.
