 A fine quality Isle of Wight Georgian longcase clock by Peter Nichols.  A mahogany case of London style (as often seen in Portsmouth and IOW) with choice flame mahogany veneers. Brass capped fluted hood columns with brass stopped fluting. Rear hood brass capped quarter columns. Side glass hood apertures. A raised plinth panel with re-entrant corners. A pagoda hood pediment with fretwork panel and fluted sides surmounted by 3 brass finials.  A well engraved silvered brass dial with date and seconds. An engraved name boss to the arch signed 'Peter Nichols, Newport' (IOW). An 8-day duration, 5 pillar mechanism striking the hours on a bell. Brass cased weights. Circa 1775.

Peter Nichols is recorded in Baillies' 'Watchmakers and Clockmakers of The World' book as working in 1770. The family including James Nichols continued working until the 19th Century.
